Remote code execution (RCE)

Remote code execution (RCE) is a vulnerability that lets an attacker run their own code on a server by sending a crafted request, usually giving them full control of the application.

RCE flaws are among the most severe vulnerabilities and often score 9.8 to 10.0 on CVSS. Once a proof of concept is public, mass exploitation can start within hours.

Recent examples include the React Server Components flaw (CVE-2025-55182) and the wp2shell chain in WordPress core (CVE-2026-63030). In both cases, edge rules were the fastest way to block exploitation while teams patched.
